Description
What is L Alanine?
L Alanine (Ala), also known as L-alanine is an alpha-amino acid. These are amino acids in which the amino group is attached to the carbon atom immediately adjacent to the carboxylate group (alpha carbon). Amino acids are organic compounds that contain amino (-NH2) and carboxyl (-COOH) functional groups, along with a side chain (R group) specific to each amino acid. L-alanine is one of 20 proteinogenic amino acids, i.e., the amino acids used in the biosynthesis of proteins. Alanine L is found in all organisms ranging from bacteria to plants to animals. It is classified as an aliphatic, non-polar amino acid.
In humans, l alanine is a non-essential amino acid that can be easily made in the body from either the conversion of pyruvate or the breakdown of the dipeptides carnosine and anserine. Alanine l can be also synthesized from branched chain amino acids such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine. L alanine is produced by reductive amination of pyruvate through a two-step process. In the first step, alpha-ketoglutarate, ammonia and NADH are converted by the enzyme known glutamate dehydrogenase to glutamate, NAD+ and water.

L Alanine Benefits:
Enhanced Endurance
Studies have shown that alanine l can prolong the time it takes to reach exhaustion in endurance athletes and allows them to increase the amount of work completed within a given time. This means more staying power when the going gets tough and potentially faster race times.
Heightened HIIT
Carnosine’s ability to buffer acid makes it the perfect foil for high-intensity interval training and sprinting. For instance, a study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise showed that l alanine supplementation significantly improved cyclists’ sprint performance at the end of a long, exhaustive ride. As any competitive athlete knows, that little kick at the end of a race could make or break your placing, so any edge you can get is important.
Improved Body Composition
The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition reported that college athletes who took l alanine over an eight-week period added more lean muscle than those who took a placebo. Makes sense: The quicker the acids and other waste products of exercise are shuttled out of your muscles, the more reps you can get and the faster you can recover between sets. This means more potential muscle added during training and more fat burned both during and after exercise.
