Description
What is Lipoic acid?
A vitamin of the vitaminB complex. It is one of thecoenzymes involved in the decarboxylationof pyruvate by the enzymepyruvate dehydrogenase. Goodsources of lipoic acid include liverand yeast.
(R)-lipoic acid is the (R)-enantiomer of lipoic acid. A vitamin-like, C8 thia fatty acid with anti-oxidant properties. It has a role as a prosthetic group, a nutraceutical and a cofactor. It is a lipoic acid, a member of dithiolanes, a heterocyclic fatty acid and a thia fatty acid. It derives from an octanoic acid and it is a conjugate acid of a (R)-lipoate & an enantiomer of a (S)-lipoic acid.

One of the main uses of lipoic acid is to treat nerve damage, including neurological diseases in diabetic patients. This dangerous long-term complication can cause pain and loss of consciousness. The disease is due to the high content of sugar (glucose) in the blood, which causes damage to nerve cells by free radicals. Lipoic acid can play a role in inhibiting nerve damage through its antioxidant effect. In addition, it can help diabetics respond to insulin, a hormone that regulates glucose.
Animal experiments have also shown that lipoic acid can increase blood flow to nerves and improve the conduction of nerve impulses. Lipoic acid is also beneficial to the liver, protecting him from free radical damage and helping it to remove toxins from the body.
Additional effect
Lipoic acid may have other potential uses, but more research is needed. Some eye-catching animal experiments have shown that it can prevent the formation of cataracts. Other animal experiments have shown that it can enhance memory (for example, it may help treat Alzheimer’s disease) and protect brain cells from damage caused by insufficient blood supply to the brain.
