Description

What is Geraniol?

Geraniol is a monoterpene that is found within many essential oils of fruits, vegetables, and herbs including rose oil, citronella, lemongrass, lavender, and other aromatic plants. It is emitted from the flowers of many species of plant and is commonly used by the food, fragrance, and cosmetic industry. Geraniol has demonstrated a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective to name a few.

Interestingly, geraniol has also been shown to sensitize tumour cells to commonly used chemotherapies including [DB00544] and [DB01248] and represents a promising cancer chemopreventive agent. Due to its anticancer effects, geraniol has been found to be effective against a broad range of cancers including breast, lung, colon, prostate, pancreatic, skin, liver, kidney and oral cancers. These pharmacologic effects are clinically important as geraniol is classified as generally-recognized-as-safe (GRAS) by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States. Sensitivity to geraniol may be identified with a clinical patch test. (Source: DrugBank)

Geraniol Uses

The scent of geraniol is the smell of blooming roses. It is the main sweetener in the perfume industry and the main ingredient of the essential oil of fake roses. Therefore, many unscrupulous merchants use geranium as rose essential oil. Aromatherapy geraniol is like hot love, passionate and charming, it is a brave love warrior. Geraniol has outstanding properties, and its antimicrobial ability is the best among all monoterpene alcohols. Therefore, trans-geranol is very effective for viral infection of skin herpes.

Geraniol is the main ingredient of rose flavors and an indispensable raw material for various floral flavors. It can also be regarded as a sweetener and can also be used to formulate food, soap, and daily cosmetic flavors. Products made from natural essential oils, formulated foods, and daily cosmetic fragrances contain more than 90% geraniol, and more than 80% geraniol when used in the preparation of soap flavors. Industrial products Geraniol and nerol are the raw materials for the manufacture of vanillin, vanillin, citral, hydroxyvanillin, ionone and vitamin A. Various esters synthesized with geraniol are also very good spices.
